For our latest episode, we interviewed Dr. Marilyn Waring, a prominent New Zealand economist and feminist, and a leading activist for women’s human rights. Dr. Waring was one of the youngest New Zealanders ever elected to Parliament, serving as a National MP between 1975 and 1984. She was just 23 when she entered Parliament and from 1978 to 1981 she was the only woman in the National caucus. After leaving politics she wrote her famous book “If Women Counted”. Due to her writings and research she is known as being the principal founder of the discipline of feminist economics. Since 2006, Dr. Waring has been a Professor of Public Policy at the Institute of Public Policy at AUT in Auckland. During this time she has focused on public policy and governance, political economy, gender analysis, and human rights.
Katrina Johnston-Zimmerman - BBC 100 Women
Our latest guest is Katrina Johnston-Zimmerman, an urban anthropologist and lecturer from Philadelphia. She co-founded the “The Women Led Cities Initiative” which aims to bring women's voices to the forefront of urban planning and design. In 2019 she was named to the “BBC’s 100 Women of 2019”, an annual listing of the most inspiring and influential women from around the world. She has served as a lecturer at Drexel University and the KTH Royal Institute of Technology. With this episode we tried something new, we conducted our interview on the streets of Philadelphia in Johnston-Zimmerman’s neighborhood, it was a great way to talk to her and learn more about urban anthropology. It was a really fun way to do the interview and we really enjoyed our conversation.
Christina Koch - Record Setting NASA Astronaut
Today’s guest is Christina Koch, a record setting NASA astronaut. She has been an astronaut since 2013. In February 2020, she returned from a 328 day mission, making her the record holder for the longest space mission by a female. During that mission she also participated in the first ever all-female spacewalk. Have you heard about Abby Wambach’s commencement speech? Abby Wambach is an ex-US soccer team player who has the most goals scored by any women ever. She recently gave a speech on her career and women empowerment at Barnard college. The speech was incredible and a must-watch for those who haven’t seen it. In the speech she argued how women have been held down by our society. It was all really moving and I think anyone can agree Abby Wambach is truly a girl power guru.
Never Too Early To Change The World
Check out Georgia Hutchinson, a 13 year old from California, who is showing that anyone can do amazing things. Recently she won the National Broadcom Masters Competition with her project on her Data Driven Dual Axis Solar Tracker. She designed the tracker so that solar panels can generate more electricity and become more economically efficient. Not only has she shown incredible intelligence but she has also helped the effort to prevent climate change. Hopefully more people will follow her lead and help save the planet.
